McGill University is an English-language public research university located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1821 by royal charter, the university bears the name of James McGill, a Scottish merchant whose bequest in 1813 established the University of McGill College. In 1885, the name was officially changed to McGill University. The university has held the top position in the country for the past 19 years in the annual Maclean's Medical Doctoral university. McGill ranks first in Canada among medical-doctoral universities in Maclean's Canadian University Rankings 2023. The university has held the top position in the ranking for 19 consecutive years.
